Модель карты HD Radeon 6370. В отношении конфигов и логов - если сейчас установлю fglrx, то заведомо знаю, что у меня будет чёрный экран. Поэтому хочу определиться "на берегу", что мне нужно будет сделать после, а может и до его установки.

Для начала положите, чтобы были под рукой пакеты иксов, свободных драйверов для вашей карты и библиотеки Mesa.

Ну да, или просто знайте, что в процессе экспериментов их наверняка раз-другой придется переустановить, поэтому команды для этого держите под рукой :) Мне вот трафик критичен и потому, если нужно с чем-то экспериментировать, я обычно скачиваю как готовый пакет, так и исходники его, а после экспериментов - лишнее удаляю.

Ну, в сообщении №6 это вроде бы учтено. Только не уверен, что оно сразу сработало как надо. Команда переключения на multi-user.target. Правильно ли я понимаю, что это должно приводить к тому же результату, что и telinit 3 в системе с обычным init?

init 3 достаточно.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old надо смотреть, естественно после загрузки в обычном режиме.
Следует помнить о приотизации файлов в директории /sys/class/backlight/ В исходниках различных DE они прописаны по разному.
