пропустил только крон, он мне пока что не нужен.

Ситуация
При попытке установки grub зависает, выдав следующую строку:

Решение
Одной названной причиной была экзотическая конфигурация дисков, типа установки на одном шлейфе дисков ультра/не-ультра DMA.
то есть в настройках бивиса косяг?

либо ide либо ahci

По-моему вы торопитесь с обновлением BIOS'а.
На ноуте лучше прошивать из под доса, я у себя делаю диском который прилагался к ноуту.
А так на обычном компе, я прошивал flashrom
Ну и согласен с Lupo Alberto, не торопитесь с перепрошивкой.
